This is a detailed study of the illustrations to Am r Khusrau's Khamsah. The first extant exemplar is from the Persian area in the late 14th century, but a case can be made that work was probably illustrated earlier in India.

Leading French painters in the late medieval period executed miniatures for lavishly illuminated books of hours. In the mid-fifteenth century, Simon de Varie commissioned such a book. Completed in 1455, it included five priceless works by the most eminent French painter of the time, Jean Fouquet, as well as other striking paintings by two of his contemporaries. In the seventeenth century, Simon de Varie's book was divided into three sections and sold as separate volumes. Two of these volumes are today in the Royal Library in The Hague. The third volume--thought lost until 1984, when it surfaced in a private collection and was subsequently acquired by the Getty Museum--contains the first miniatures by Jean Fouquet to have been discovered in eighty years. This beautiful book will reproduce in color all of the miniatures and historiated initials in the original manuscript, along with selected text pages with secondary decoration. Comparative illustrations also accompany the two essays in the volume. Marrow's text addresses the role of books of hours in late medieval culture; the contents and form of de Varie's Hours; and the relationship of the miniatures by Fouquet to the rest of the artist's oeuvre. In a related essay, Francois Avril discusses the position of Simon de Varie and his family in mid-fifteenth-century France. The papers collected in this volume discuss descriptive methods and present conclusions relevant for the history of the book production and reception. Books printed in Europe in the 15th and 16th century still had much in common with manuscripts. They are not mere textual sources, but also material objects whose physical make-up and individual features need to be taken into account in library projects for cataloguing and digitization.

This book examines for the first time the scriptorium of the Augustinian Monastery of St. Pancras in Hamersleben. In the last quarter of the 12th century six wellknown manuscripts were produced there. Of the fourteen scribeartists involved, one in particular stands out as responsible for the correct text and illustrations. The bold innovations of this master scribeartist are expressed especially in the decoration programmes of a Psalter and two Gospel books. The manuscripts produced in the Hamersleben Scriptorium, as well as its notable library, were dispersed throughout the world or thought to be lost. In this book six known manuscripts are brought home, to Hamersleben. Each manuscript is minutely analysed for its codicology, palaeography, text and illuminations. The style of script as well as the style and iconography of the illustrations are discussed in relation to those from other monasteries in Saxony, in order to examine the evolvement of the regional style.
