Being the first version that was released, the Game Boy version of the game uses a password-based saving system to save the player's progress. The game consisted of seven floors where various items and parts of Bitsy (Franky's girlfriend) were hidden. Keys and special items were needed to access additional areas to find more body parts and equipment required to resurrect Bitsy.
Dr. Franken II is a side-scrolling platformer what places you in control of a Frankenstein-like character named Franky. The goal is collect different objects within different levels to put something back together. In order for Franky to recharge his health, you need to find the parts to fix the electricity machine that does it. You will also be taken to exotic locales such as Egypt and the bottom of the ocean to find pieces of Bitsy's golden tablet. Like its predecessor, there are many trap doors, monsters, and other obstacles that need to be overcome. Keys are needed to unlock new areas of the game, which can be found in the far reaches of the level.
Dragon's Lair is a side-scrolling platform game based on the laserdisc game of the same name released for the Nintendo Entertainment System and developed by the MotiveTime group. Plotwise, the game is identical to the original. The game is a side-scroller with the character walking slowly. Dirk can walk, crawl, or jump forward, and he has an array of weapons that he can discover and use to dispose of enemies. The controller layout is reversed from other mainstream NES titles, with Select functioning as the Pause-button while Start is used for the Candle object (which helps reveal hidden weapons). Also, B is used for jumping, and A for attacking (the input of the A & B buttons is almost always the opposite in similar NES games). Two different versions were released later, first for the Famicom, with major improvements on playability and speed, and a second one for PAL regions, expanding upon the Famicom version with new enemies and cutscenes.
The PAL version of Dragon's Lair expands upon the Japanese version, still having a good speed, but adding new enemy types and cutscenes in-between levels. Contrary to other multiregional games at the time, the PAL version is a lot faster than the original NTSC version, despite the refresh rate being lower.
The Japanese version of NES Dragon's Lair had a major overhaul in quality, being the fastest version of the game. It also has changes in level design to make the bosses less easier to be cheated.
Hybrid is a 3D first-person shooter with a futuristic high-tech theme. Earth is on the the brink of collapse after years of fighting against an alien invasion, and you are among those who remain to fight. Your next mission is to strike a compound deep within the mountains. Choose from one of four characters: cybernetic commando George McKenzie, flame magic user Akiko Tyler, alien soldier Alien, or hard-boiled mercenary Bloodchaser Field. Use your guns and bombs to make your way through the complex and wipe out anything that moves.
The Adventures of Dr. Franken is a standard platformer where the player navigates platforms and avoids enemies. Touching too many enemies result in death. To defeat himself Franky has the ability to kick foes. The goal of every level is to find a package which is hidden in it. To reach it Franky also has to solve switch puzzles. There are overall 20 levels including four bonus levels.
