They are now being chased through a wintry Denmark by the German Army, Danish Quislings and the Danish freedom fighters. Love crosses their path when they take a Jewish girl as hostage.

In a future surveillance and treatment society where imaginative literature is censored, author Adam Gregor lives an unhappy life. During an argument with his wife, who is prone to conformity, he pushes her over the staircase landing and now believes he has killed her. However, society does not operate with the concept of guilt, and Adam cannot be convicted of murder, but is released after psychiatric treatment. He tries to get in touch with his young son, but encounters a friendly but determined power structure. At the same time, he is monitored by the authorities, who hope he will contact his oppositionist publisher.

It develops into a passionate love affair, but in the long run, the age difference and especially Betty's upper-class background weigh too heavily. Jack's friend, the cynical journalist Hugo, has casual relationships with several girls until he falls in love with the model Ruth. However, she returns to her husband, and when Hugo later has his face disfigured in a car accident, he ends up committing suicide. Before doing so, he tells Jack that he and several others have also had relationships with Betty.
