Ahmed hopes to marry Dawlat, the sister of his friend, but because of the social and financial gulf between them, her father refuses to approve the match. Ahmed sends him a letter formally asking for Dawlat's hand in marriage, but her cousin Ibrahim tears away part of the letter, reversing the meaning of what remains. Reading the incomplete letter, Dawlat mistakenly believes that Ahmed is only after her fortune. Enraged, she lashes him across the face with a whip, driving him insane, and he is committed to a mental hospital. Later, Dawlat discovers the missing half of the letter and finally learns the truth.
